Job Title: DGM - Operational Excellence


Job Location: Bangalore


Job Summary:

Manage the execution of Kennametal Business System, including Hoshin Kanri (Policy Management), Daily Management, Hoshin Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) and Cross-Functional Management thru leading continuous improvement and lean manufacturing efforts to improve financial performance and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for safety, quality, production, efficiency, and service. In this role, you will act as a change agent to help eliminate non-value-added activities while improving operational excellence throughout the facilities.


Job Responsibilities


  • Manage the timely and successful performance of the strategic planning & implementation process for the development of the annual company Hoshin and KOS Action Plan.
  • Support plant/business owners on the development of departmental Hoshin activities and utilize A3 methodology.
  • Oversee the deployment and maintenance of the daily management system across multiple departments, consulting on effective PDCA through standard work and Gemba activities/Tier Accountability Boards.
  • Promote the company-wide KI program ensuring achievement of Kaizen targets; including on-time achievement, high quality QC Story results, and overall associate engagement.
  • Drive KI prioritization with top management for critical business issues that promote step-change improvements.
  • Manage a team of interdisciplinary professionals that provide critical business services around process management, project management, data analytics, and business reporting and facilitation of KI activities.
    • Provide consulting services for process management and the configuration of the document management systems.
    • Develop and own the system for project planning and execution of key business initiatives, administering the Cross-Functional Team management. Coach and train associates on lean tools and fundamentals.
    • Execute on the integration of company business systems to deploy a business intelligence framework that improves collaboration, data visualization and analytics.
    • Manage Business & Functional Reviews and externally structured TQM initiatives, including the identification and coordination of action items and follow up tasks.
    • Facilitate the Monthly and Quarterly Global Functional Reporting process to ensure on-time and accurate submissions of KI reports
    • Provide feedback and support as needed to Plant Managers, Managers, supervisors and responsible associates regarding CI activities and coach/facilitate/train events
  • Participate in improvement activities including high priority KI projects, as needed.
  • Participate in the definition of Kennametal Corporate Standard for each Pillar and for KMT Manufacturing DNA as a whole, and the audit criteria (points / levels / templates / standard).


  • Actively audit Plants and develop the next generation of auditors (train the trainer) among line professionals (Plant Managers, IE, Material Managers…)
  • He is actively involved and promotes in cross fertilization programs and global projects sharing all best practices of his Plant / Region
  • He is in charge of improving Focused improved activities including (among others) Root Cause Analysis process improvement (# of people, effectiveness), PDCA, Kaizen Classification (cost / effectiveness improvement), standardization, Early product and Early Equipment Management.
  • He is strongly connected with HR team in order to define / improve training, culture and career path making sure that in the long run no one can reach upper level of Operations not having a solid experience in OE.

Education Qualifications / Certifications


Bachelor's Degree in Operations, Engineering or other manufacturing-related fields

Black belt in Lean & 6 sigma.

Overall ` 15 - 20 years of experience in Industry.

  • Five (5) years in leading Operational excellence function & continuous improvement experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated experience in the areas of Continuous Improvement, Operational Excellence, Lean principles, statistics, and data analysis
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including the ability to create basic reports, documents, presentations, and spreadsheets in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint.
  • Ability to lead through influence rather than authority
  • Ability to learn and understand materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of products.
  • Experience in optimizing the performance of one or more of the following:

o Factory systems and line process inputs

o Information flow

o Raw materials flow, conveyance, blending, and drying systems

o Continuous process operations

o Quality systems for defect elimination

o EHS systems for a safe working environment

o Operational systems for waste elimination

o People development for engagement and ownership

Education: BE Degree engineering


Experience and/or Training: 
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:


  • Lean manufacturing experience
  • Lean / 6 Sigma Certification, American Society for Quality Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence or American Society for Quality Certified Quality Engineer
  • Experience with the following methodologies and practices: FMEA, Kaizen, Lean tools, 5S, Visual Factory Aids, SMED concepts, VSM, VOC, and Poke Yoke


Physical and Mental Demands.


  • This position includes frequent walking to the production facilities to inspect goods and/or gather samples.
  • There is a light amount of lifting (> 20 lbs.) to move materials around for access to items for inspection and gathering samples.
  • The mental and physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.


Working Environment.


  • The workplace is a production facility with moving equipment and dangerous chemicals on site. Compliance with Kennametal Environmental, Health and Safety standards must be followed at all times.
  • There will be intermittent exposure to loud noises from production machinery and fork-lift driving.
